Thin section of human tooth enamel. This polarized light image highlights the incremental structure of enamel; each diagonal line (lower right to upper left) marks approximately one week of enamel growth. Such information can be used to age young individuals in forensic cases or to determine how long a tooth crown took to grow to completion.
